Family Adventures…..in Algonquin Park, Ontario

Algonquin Park is one of Ontario’s best loved Provincial Parks and a Triptoes Canada favourite. A little over a three hour drive from Toronto, Algonquin is a wilderness and wildlife lover’s paradise and a great place to spend time for an exploring family.

The vast majority of the interior is only accessible by canoe or by foot, and with nearly 2,500 lakes within the park, you could easily get lost for days and days with only the moose and beavers for company.

However, the park is also traversed by Highway 60 and from here there are numerous hiking trails to explore that are suitable for all ages and abilities. Interpretive trails that guide you through the lakes and forests, with distances between 1 km and 11 km, are great for families. The trails have beautiful look-out views and make for a lovely outdoor’s morning, afternoon or whole day. Bring a picnic, plenty of bug spray, sun cream and a camera.

Within the park, there is an excellent Visitor Centre, Logging Museum and Art Centre. During the month of August, the park holds weekly ‘Public Wolf Howls’ on a Thursday, a tradition that has been going for over 50 years.

For the very, very adventurous and experienced paddlers, there are outfitters that can help you prepare for a self-guided canoe trip of either a day or longer. Algonquin offers the canoeing enthusiast a network of over 2,100 km of canoe routes. A detailed map-brochure, Canoe Routes of Algonquin Park shows the entire park network of canoe routes, portages, and interior campsites.

For families who prefer a gentler introduction to canoeing and camping, Triptoes offers the excellent Voyageur Quest 3 day guided canoe and camping trip. Either join a small group in the park get a transfer from Toronto.

This trip is an excellent addition to an Ontario holiday for those who would like some adventure in the great Canadian outdoors but want to know that all the details are being taken care of. Suitable for children from aged 6 upwards, it is also ideal for those who have never canoed before. Enjoy campfire meals, lake swimming and being woken by the sound of loons.

For families who prefer to spend their nights in the comfort of a bed, we also offer the lovely Killarney Lodge in Algonquin. Families can have their own cabin/cottage with private canoe and visit the park.
